One Space at a Time Professional Organizing is a Burlington-based small business supporting people through the process of decluttering and organizing their home or office. It offers customized services that focus on increasing the function of people’s spaces and helps them feel calm. Many people feel stressed when they think about organizing their space, so they never end up doing it. Some people avoid the process because they are concerned about how to do it in a way that is environmentally sustainable. Sustainability is a core value of One Space at a Time. We encourage sustainable decluttering practices such as donation or reselling of items that could be useful to others; appropriate disposal of items that cannot be repurposed or passed on; and we offer free drop-off for certain types of donations and recyclables. One Space at a Time also encourages sustainable organizing practices in various ways, such as using storage solutions already owned; purchasing second-hand storage solutions; using low-waste or no-waste organizing solutions where appropriate; prioritizing more eco-friendly materials when making new product purchases; and we offer a product swap program amongst clients. While these, and other, sustainable practices are offered to all clients, none are required and clients may choose the degree to which environmental sustainability should be incorporated into their organizing project. There are lots of benefits of decluttering and organizing including knowing what one owns, knowing where to find all of their belongings, and going through the process of evaluating what is important to live a valued life. The natural consequence to these is usually a change in purchasing behaviour moving forward. Another win for the environment.
