Do the Butt Blitz!

Do the Butt Blitz!

In 2023, BurlingtonGreen joined our friends at A Greener Future for their national Butt Blitz Campaign. They have the ambitious goal of collecting 1 million cigarette butts each April, while working to educate the public about cigarette litter.

To date, with the help of thousands of volunteers across Canada, they have collected over 5 million cigarette butts…WOW!

Throughout 2023, BurlingtonGreen volunteers collected over 7000 cigarette butts from along Burlington Beach. As of June 2024, another 3000 have been collected.

It is also a worrisome sign that people who frequent this beautiful ecosystem still maintain a habit of tossing their cigarette butts.

did you know?
  • 8000 tonnes of cigarette waste is littered per year in Canada. This is the same weight as 53 blue whales or 8000 small cars!

  • Each cigarette butt contains about 130 chemicals

  • 1 cigarette butt in 1 litre of water for 4 days is lethal enough to kill 50% of test fish exposed to the leachate

What you can do...

Pick up butts and bring them to us!

Get involved by making sure you collect cigarette butts as part of your Clean Up and by signing up to participate in A Greener Future’s Butt Blitz every April.

BurlingtonGreen will continue to be the local drop-off for butts collected in Burlington, so either way, you have the option of bringing them to us so that we are able to ship them to Terracycle for recycling.

Email us to find an ideal time to drop off your butts to our Eco-Hub on Burlington Beach.

Change your habits/help spread awareness

If you smoke cigarettes and/or know friends, family members, colleagues, etc. that do, please share this information with them and encourage them to properly dispose of their butts.

Most people that litter them are simply unaware of how bad the butts are for our ecosystems. Tossing your butts is somehow still socially acceptable so we can each do our part to educate our circles of influence.
